Scholarships
SEIU Healthcare Minnesota & Iowa offers thirteen scholarship opportunities - six awarded twice per year (spring/fall) and one awarded once in the fall for use at any accredited post-secondary institution.
Mindy Tomfohrde Scholarships: Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded twice per year to members for their continuing education. The applicant must be a SEIU Healthcare MN & IA member in good standing as of the time of the scholarship drawing. Scholarship applicants must submit a minimum 500-word essay on the following topic:
“What are the advantages and benefits for you being a member of SEIU Healthcare MN & IA?”
Got Your Back Scholarships: Two $1,000 scholarships are awarded twice per year to younger SEIU members, who are facing greater economic, racial, identity challenges than any generation since the great Depression. Applicants must be 30 years old or younger as of the time of application, and must be a member in good standing as of the time of the scholarship drawing. Scholarship applicants must submit a minimum 500-word essay on the following topic:
"What current issues are most important to you in your daily life and how has SEIU Healthcare MN & IA made an impact?"
Cecilia Razook Memorial Scholarship: Two $1,000 scholarship will be awarded twice per year for the continuing education of spouses, children, grandchildren, stepchildren, or legal wards of our members. The SEIU Healthcare MN & IA member must be in good standing as of the time of the scholarship drawing. Scholarship applicants must submit a minimum 500-word essay on the following topic:
“What does your family member being a part of SEIU Healthcare MN & IA mean to you?”
Daniel Olakunle Memorial Scholarship: One $1,000 scholarships will be awarded once per year, during Fall, to a member, or their dependent, who seeks to further their education in the field of mental health.The applicant must be a SEIU Healthcare MN & IA member in good standing as of the time of the scholarship drawing. (APPLICABLE DURING FALL ONLY) Scholarship applicants must submit a minimum 500-word essay on the following topic:
“How do you plan to use your continued education in mental health to be an advocate for patients, a leader for coworkers, and a promoter of mental health awareness.”
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
Applicants must be SEIU Healthcare Minnesota & Iowa members in good standing, the child of a member in good standing, or nominated by a member in good standing. No academic performance standards or records are required for eligibility. Please submit only one application per person. Duplicate entries will be disqualified. Applicants are not eligible to win multiple awards in any one given year. The applicant (or their parent) must be an active member at the time that winners are announced.
SELECTION PROCESS:
Application essays will be anonymized and the winning essay voted on at the Quarter 1 and August Executive Board meetings. Applicants will be notified of the results by mail.

- Awards are made payable jointly to the winners and the educational institution as indicated.
- The Officers, Executive Board members, and staff of SEIU Healthcare MN & Iowa are not eligible.
